The Lab
The Lab is a section of the left sidebar that generates random FX chains for you. It's a fast way to get inspiration, explore unfamiliar combinations, or just hear what MNodes can do.

Opening the Lab
Click the Lab icon in the left sidebar (the flask / beaker icon at the bottom).
Not seeing the sidebar? Toggle it with Ctrl/Cmd + Alt + E or go to View → Show Explorer.
How it works
- Choose a recipe: currently FX Chain.
- Pick one or more flavour tags that describe the kind of sound you want.
- Hit the Generate button (the magic wand).
MNodes builds a random chain of effect nodes matching your tags, wires it into your graph, and plays it.
Flavour tags
| Tag | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Tone | Filters and EQ-style colouring |
| Drive | Distortion, saturation, bitcrush |
| Motion | LFOs and modulated effects |
| Transform | Pitch shifting, frequency shifting, unusual processors |
| Space | Reverb, delay, spatial effects |
| Dynamics | Compression, limiting, expansion |
| Weird | Wildcard: adds unusual or experimental nodes |
You can enable any combination. More tags = longer, more varied chains.
Global Dry/Wet
Every chain the Lab generates has a global Dry/Wet control at the very end. This lets you blend the whole processed chain with your original signal without rewiring anything. Useful for quickly dialling in the intensity of a random patch.
Tips
- Generate several chains until one clicks, then tweak the nodes individually in the graph.
- A good chain can be saved as a preset and reused later.
- If you love the result, Group to Subgraph (Ctrl/Cmd + G) to keep it as a reusable effect block.
- The Lab is non-destructive for your current patch: generated nodes are added; nothing is removed unless you tell it to.
